Winners of London’s water advertising competition

Bethnal Green and Lewisham pupils win chance to see their healthy advert come to life

Both winning entries

London’s child obesity taskforce is proud to announce the winners of a competition to design adverts to encourage children and young people to drink more water. You can read more about the competition here.

Almost 300 young people entered our competition with the winners getting the chance to work with a top advertising agency, Havas, to design their work and see it in adverts in London.

Drinking more water is important for children because it means they drink less high sugar and high fat drinks, stay hydrated and protect their teeth. Children who are healthy and well, do better in school. Drinking more water can also reduce the number of single use plastic bottles.

· The winners in the younger age category are Jayden, Kevin and Andrew from Drumbeat School in Lewisham.

· The winner in the older age category is Ayaan age 11 from Oaklands School in Bethnal Green.

They will all receive recognition for their work from the Mayor of London and be invited to Havas’s offices in London produce their work and receive goody bags to thank them for taking part.

The competition is part of the Mayor of London’s strategy to get more primary and secondary schools to become ‘water only’ in a bid to tackle childhood obesity in London. Making water freely available and introducing ‘water only’ schools — where just water and low-fat milk are allowed as drinks — was one of the ambitions of London’s Child Obesity Taskforce employed by the Mayor in 2018.

Mayoral Health Advisor Dr Tom Coffey OBE said: “I’d like to congratulate Ayaan on his fantastic creative design to encourage children to drink water. We all have a role to play in helping ensure our young people are healthy, and I hope Ayaan’s fantastic poster will inspire others to make healthy choices.”
